Lady in the Water: A Bed Time Story
Lady in the Water is the happenings in the finite line between the real world and a fairy tale world. Stuttering his way through his every day existence, Cleavland, finds a lady in the pool of the apartment's building that he manages. He takes it on himself to help her, even though she says very little about herself. With very few clues from here, he finds out that she is actually a character from a fairy tale.
This movie has two main characters: Cleavland and Story, the lady from the pool. However, there are too many secondary characters that are as important. These characters were initially introduced in the very first part of the movie either by their interaction with Cleavland, or when Cleavland walked the new guy in B13 to his new apartment. This early introduction was important since those same characters were taken to another dimension through their importance in the fairy tale. At the end, almost everyone in the building is gathered to help Story.
When I watch movies, I always look at them from two perspectives. The critic perspective, and the perspective of just enjoying the movie. I definitely enjoyed the movie. In addition, and just like all Shyalaman's movies, It took me to another dimension of thinking. Of course it's a bedtime story, but sometimes few silly looking words have real deep meanings below their surface. From a critic's perspective I was amazed how Shyamalan was able to convert kids' bedtime story to a full film that can be watched by everyone. It might be a little complicated for younger kids, but I am sure they will still enjoy it, and at least raise their curiosity about the story.
Yet again, M. Night Shyamalan entertains us with a mind-capturing masterpiece.
